Hooked on Kauai
specializes in two different fishing techniques: "whipping"
and "dunking". These two styles of fishing were developed to
handle the different kinds of habitat here on the islands.
Whipping is the practice of casting top-water and mid-water
lures over coral reefs and deep-water locations using a 8-9
foot fishing pole with a spinning reel. Dunking consists of casting
out a 5-8 ounce lead weight with a leader and baited hook
coming off of a swivel about 24' up from the lead or 2 feet
from the sandy ocean bottom. Dunking poles use heavier
tackle and can range from 10 - 13 feet in length. Each approach is targeting
different fish in the water column therefore increasing the
chance of getting a strike. Both techniques are simple
in concept but do require a good amount of strength and
stamina.
Whipping poles are available for short term
rental.
Just like our guided tours, we customize each rental package
to meet your specific needs. We also provide information
regarding target species size and catch limits, general rules
of how to fish responsibly on our reefs and shorelines and
backpacks with a starter kit of all the necessary lures and
tackle for your very own fishing adventure! A
reservation at least 2 weeks prior to your desired fishing
trip is strongly suggested.
* Due to Kauai's challenging and fragile ecosystem rental
packages are not intended for the beginning or novice
angler. Freshwater and or deep sea fishing proficiency does not qualify,
SALTWATER SHORELINE EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED. Inexperience can result in a negative and sometimes
even severe impact on the ocean environment. It is highly
recommended that you first seek professional and or local
knowledge in order to learn the proper techniques of fishing
effectively, responsibly and sustainably from this unique
and precious resource.
